A remarkable new book will be released in August: “Elvis: Dressed to Rock.” In this richly illustrated edition, the clothing that helped shape Elvis Presley’s image and career is examined in detail for the first time.
For this book, the Graceland archives were opened, giving readers a unique look at more than 150 original garments from Elvis's career. From the stylish rockabilly suits of the 1950s to the famous gemstone-studded jumpsuits of the 1970s, the outfits Elvis wore on stage became almost as legendary as his music.
The book features an impressive selection of costumes, capes, belts, boots, jewelry, and original design drawings. Naturally, the famous gold lamé suit from the fifties is included, as is the iconic leather suit from the '68 Comeback Special. The last jumpsuit Elvis wore on stage, during his performance in Indianapolis in 1977, is also featured extensively.
In addition to the well-known outfits, the book also contains rare pieces that have rarely or never been shown in their entirety before. For example, three so-called “Cisco Kid” outfits from Elvis’ Las Vegas shows in 1971 and two so-called “Dude Suits” from 1972 are presented in detail.
The release is richly illustrated with new photography of every garment, supplemented with historical footage of Elvis on stage, album covers showcasing the outfits, and original sketches by designer Bill Belew, the man responsible for much of Elvis's most spectacular stage costumes.
Costume historian Karan Feder provides the garments with extensive background information on the design, details, and the craftsmanship with which these unique outfits were made.
ElvisMatters will of course also be offering this special book. Pre-order now to secure your copy.
